Blackball Media is on the hunt for a new staff writer to join its award-winning Car Dealer Magazine title.

Car Dealer is a leading motor trade publication that provides daily news and features for car industry professionals. The title started life as a glossy magazine but, since 2020, has been a completely digital brand.

Its online magazine continues to be published monthly while its website leads the way in the automotive sector – in 2023 it clocked up 12.3m visits, making it one of the most read motoring titles in the UK.

Since its creation in 2008, Car Dealer has mixed professional subject matter with a fun and entertaining style of presentation. Our new staff writer will be just as happy covering a breaking business news story than they are writing about cars. It’s a diverse role and no two days will be the same.

The role will encompass….

– Covering breaking business and car industry news stories for Car Dealer’s website and magazine

– Writing editorial and commercial features

– Assisting with magazine content and Blackball Media’s range of editorial clients

– Attending and assisting the Car Dealer team at its industry-leading events

The role is home-based with occasional meet-ups for editorial meetings and company get-togethers, and as Car Dealer Magazine is part of the wider Blackball Media and Baize Group, you might even be working on some of its other brands and editorial contracts.

Along with being happy to work from home, experience in business journalism or in motoring journalism is preferred – if you have both then that’s even better! An inquisitive brain and a willingness to learn are essential, as is a clean driving licence.

Essential skills

– Impeccable writing and grammar skills

– Proactive work habits – we want someone who thrives on finding and writing news and covering the car industry!

– Ability to work remotely with occasional face-to-face editorial meetings

– The flexibility to sometimes work at unsociable times of the day (journalism is never a 9am-5pm job and there is an expectation to occasionally attend events and car launches that are outside of normal business hours)

– A full UK manual driving licence, clean with less than six points

– A desire to learn!

Desirable but not essential skills

– Experience with media law/trained in media law

– Hampshire- or south-coast based (our registered office is in Gosport)

– Comfortable in front of a camera and/on live audiences for videos, live webinars and conferences
